If your cooler is running constantly, it’s usually trying to compensate for a problem that’s making it harder to maintain the set temperature. Here are the most common causes and how to fix them:
1. Poor door seals
Worn or damaged gaskets let warm air in, making the cooler run more often. Inspect for cracks or loose edges and replace gaskets if needed.
2. Dirty condenser coils
Dust, grease, or debris on the condenser coils block heat release, forcing the system to work longer. Clean coils regularly (about once a month) to restore efficiency.
3. Thermostat or sensor issues
A faulty thermostat or sensor can give false readings, making the cooler think it’s warmer than it is. If the displayed temperature doesn’t match a thermometer, have it tested and replaced.
4. Blocked airflow
Food or boxes blocking vents or fans prevent proper air circulation. Rearrange items to keep airflow clear, and check evaporator fans for obstructions.
5. Incorrect temperature setting
If the thermostat is set too low, the cooler will run longer than necessary. Adjust to the recommended range (often 35–40°F for most applications).
6. Refrigerant leak or low charge
A leak or insufficient refrigerant means the system can’t cool effectively, leading to constant operation. This requires professional refrigerant handling and repair.
7. Other factors
- Air filter clogs (in air-cooled systems) reduce efficiency.
- Undersized system or poor insulation can cause constant run times.
- Hot weather can cause long cycles, but if it never shuts off in mild conditions, it’s a problem.
